Shirley was born in The Bronx, New York City, to Gil Antonio Perez and Epifania Ramona Cardona, both of San German, Puerto Rico, on November 13, 1943. She attended school in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and later earned her nursing degree from Catholic Hospital de la Concepcion in San German. For more than a decade, she served as a nurse at La Concepcion Hospital in San German, Centro Medico Hospital in San Juan, and Hospital Perea in Mayaguez. Her compassion for the sick and love for learning about medicine continued throughout her life.
On August 8, 1975, Shirley married Andres Flores-Santana at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in San German. Their marriage of fifty years was one of faith and devotion to their three sons, extended family, and community. As an Army wife for two decades, Shirley created a sense of home and warmth wherever her family lived. While in the Republic of Panama, she volunteered with JROTC students at Cristobal High School, offering encouragement and support to many who came to see her as a second mother.
Her Catholic faith was the guiding force of her life. A parishioner of St. Matthew Catholic Church in San Antonio from 2007 to 2025, she was active in the Legion of Mary and the parish Pro-Life ministry. Her devotion to prayer and her love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary inspired all who knew her.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Andres; her sons, Andres Flores-Perez, Fr. Miguel R. Flores-Perez, and Carlos Flores-Perez; her grandson, Alejandro Flores-DeLoof; her sister, Maria Perez Cardona; her brother, Antolin Perez Cardona; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister Mylna Rivera; her half-brother Israel “Junior” Perez; and her brother Jose Ramon Perez.
