

She was born March 7, 1937 in Durant, Oklahoma to Joe and Viola Thomas Harbert. She grew up in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where she was valedictorian of her high school class.
She married Dennis E. Nichols on June 3, 1955 and followed his military career to a number of locations in the United States and to Japan in 1959.
She lived in Boerne, Texas from 1968-1979 and settled in San Antonio in 1982. In 1970, Shirley graduated with honors from Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.
In 1978, she earned a Masters of Arts in Education Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio where she was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society.
She retired from North East Independent School District in 1999 after 29 years of service. During her tenure, she taught at Nimitz Middle School where she later became assistant principal. She was also assistant principal at Krueger Middle School. Shirley was principal of the North East ISD Alternative School and John H. Wood Middle School from 1991-1999.
She served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals from 1993-1999. Shirley received many awards and honors during her career.
Although Shirley excelled in her career, family was the primary focus of her life. She loved to travel, loved camping and any kind of family gathering. Shirley and Dennis, avid square dancers, belonged to The Boerne Bunch for ten years.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son-in-law, Thomas B. Stanley, Sr.
She is survived by her husband, her children Susan Stanley, Lee Nichols, and Kathy Nichols, 9 grandchildren and their spouses, Ricky and Laurie Rankin Byno, Daniel and Sarah Rohrer Nichols, Christopher and Morgan Applegate Rankin, William and Tiffany Clemens Nichols, Krystal Theilen, David Theilen, Thomas B. Stanley, Jr., Nicholas Theilen, and Dennis N. Stanley, 2 great-grand daughters, Mackenzee Nichols and Braelyn Byno, seven siblings, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Shirley included many more people in her extended family.
