

The daughter of immigrants Solomon Sterenberg and Klara Gutfleisch Sterenberg, she was guided throughout her life by the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, "Repair of the World".
She pursued a broad spectrum of interests including Jewish learning, interfaith dialogue, public literacy, politics, social action, writing, the fine arts and the performing arts.
Her volunteer contributions to the San Antonio community since her arrival in 1984 touched the lives of countless individuals. A primary focus was the enhancement of the library at Congregation Agudas Achim. Shirley leaves to her family and to all who knew her a legacy of kindness, compassion and selflessness.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Julius, with whom she enjoyed 35 years of a beautiful marriage, and by her brother, Leo Sterenberg.
She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses: Carole and Rabbi Jerome Fox of Hot Springs, AR, and Alice and John Troy of San Antonio; grandchildren: Elana Fox Lippa and husband Gene Lippa, Ari Fox, Jeremy Troy and Joshua Troy; and great-grandson Aaron Lippa. Shirley is also survived by sisters Beatrice Sterenberg of San Diego, CA and Ruth Rutstein Posner of San Antonio; and brother Albert Nathan Sterenberg of Freeport, NY, as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Interment in Long Island, NY on Tuesday, December 11, 2007.
