Steve was born November 2, 1945 to Margaret and Leroy Fry and spent his childhood in Harlingen, Texas. After graduating from Harlingen High School, Steve attended the University of Texas, followed by the University of Houston Law School. Steve started his career in the energy industry in Houston at Tenneco and Browning Ferris, Inc. before seeking adventure at Buttes Gas & Oil in California. In 1978, with encouragement from his wife, Steve found his way back to Texas joining LaVaca Energy in San Antonio, which later became Valero Energy Corporation. Steve worked at Valero for 18 years in numerous capacities, ultimately serving as Chief Administrative Officer. Steve was passionately active in the Alamo Heights community. One of his proudest achievements was his involvement in the establishment of the Alamo Heights School Foundation in 1987, where he served as President until 1989. He also served as President of the Alamo Heights Fort Sam Soccer League, and he served on the Boards of Santa Rosa Hospital, Southwest Psychiatric Hospital, Northeast YMCA, United Way, Governor's Club of San Antonio and Alamo Heights United Methodist Church.
Above all else, Steve is remembered by his family as the original "Fry Daddy," a father of the first order. He was a kind, wise and generous soul who was seldom seen without an infectious smile upon his face. While he will be dearly missed, his legacy will continue for generations to come.
Steve is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan Hastedt Fry; his three sons, Steven Edward Fry, Jr., Casey Alan Fry and Joel Robert Fry; his beloved daughters-in-law, Kelly Wade Fry, Elizabeth Hornberger Fry and Jenna Jorgensen Fry; and his five grandchildren, Nancy Nell, Raleigh, Conrad, Wallace, and John Robert. He is also survived by his younger siblings, Robert Dodd Fry of Kingwood, Texas, and Jean Maddox with her husband Jim of Nashville, Tennessee. The Fry family would like to send special thanks to Nuha Kadri and Josh Levine of MBS Fitness, and to the wonderful team at Arden Courts of San Antonio for their tremendous support over Steve's last years.
