After a wonderful life well lived, and a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease in the last few years, Stuart passed from this life on May 26th, with his wife by his side, and surrounded by their children and his sisters. We are all so grateful that he was with us at home, and in his own bed.
Where do I begin to write about my handsome, intelligent, musically gifted, courageous husband, and how he lived his life.
Stuart was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Drs. Maurice and Doris Depenbrock Adam on July 31, 1952. He spent his years growing up in Dallas, Texas. Stuart graduated from St. Mark’s Academy and then attended and graduated from Duke University, majoring in Religion and Psychology. Stuart’s favorite memories of those days were Duke basketball, along with playing guitar and singing in a 70’s Christian band, JC Power and Light. Another memory during that time was being chosen as part of an archeology team to work in Israel to unearth the City of Meron, that dated back before Christ. Being tall and slender, Stuart was lowered into the portals to discover areas in this city.
After graduating from Duke in 1976, Stuart moved to San Antonio to further his studies at Trinity University taking graduate classes, ultimately deciding to get his education certification. Stuart’s life blossomed during this time by making additional lifelong friendships in Christian groups while continuing to play his guitar and sing with his incredible voice. For four years he played with many friends in the Trinity community. At that time Stuart, Chuck Nelson, and Larry Heller formed the very popular band, Sojourn. Stuart continued to play acoustic guitar and mesmerized us with his beautiful voice, while harmonizing with his good friends and bandmates. Sojourn had quite the following, and fortunately for his soon to be girlfriend and wife, he was both a gentleman and somewhat naive, to not realize that he had a fan club, many being female followers. It was during his Sojourn days that Stuart met the love of his life, Sabrina. After dating for 11 weeks, Stuart proposed, she said yes, and they were married 3 months later…and so began their marriage and love story of 37 years.
During the years to come Stuart loved being a dad to Kyle, Caroline, and Madison. Stuart helped to lead Indian Guides and Boy Scouts with Kyle. He also loved helping with dance productions, singing, choir, and band for Caroline and Madison. His favorite family times were spent outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, gardening, working with his hands and tools to precisely build decks, bunny cages, and more.
He also taught math, science and social studies in several elementary school districts, including NEISD, ECISD, NISD, and Saint Mary’s Hall Private School. He served as the Lower School Music Chaplain at Saint Mary’s Hall. Even though Stuart continued to perform professionally, his true calling was to serve God by leading others to Christ through worship.
Stuart by far was one of the most intelligent and gifted men I have known, yet oh so humble. He had an innate gift of listening closely to what others were saying. He also had a really funny sense of humor that would catch us off guard.
Not having Stuart in our daily lives will leave an incredible hole, that only God can begin to fill. Yet, as his wife, I made a promise to him that I would try my best to carry on his kind, loving, gentle way of treating others, and behave myself.
Stuart is deeply missed by:
