Our sweet Mother Teruyo Hashimoto Rangel, age 90, passed away in San Antonio on Saturday, June 4, 2022, from complications of dementia with her eldest son Arthur by her side. Arthur affectionately and lovingly cared for Mom the past few years helping her enjoy life.
Mom was born in Osaka, Japan on March 14, 1932, the daughter of Asano and Rinnosuke Hashimoto. Postwar Japan, she worked as a seamstress at Camp Sakai where she met US Army surgical nurse Antonio "Tony" Mendoza Rangel (DOB 06/14/1929). Mom and Dad wed on May 6, 1953 and celebrated 58 years of marriage until his passing on January 4, 2012.
Mom lived the life of a military spouse and adjusted to moving often. She stoically and graciously raised three children while her husband served in Korea and Viet Nam. First child Arthur was born while stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Second child George was born while stationed at Camp Zama, Japan. She took a taxi to the hospital on her own to have Susan while stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Mom endured many sacrifices at home while her husband served overseas.
She worked tirelessly as a full-time mom without complaint. She used cotton diapers on her children which were hand washed for reuse. Mom cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and made worn clothes new again with a needle and thread. She never learned how to drive a car and did not own a cell phone.
Mom had many nicknames, Grandma, "Graamaa," or "Oba'chan" but she was the central figure in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with family and was happy whenever those around her were happy. Mom cared for others before she cared for herself and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Teruyo is survived by two sons Arthur Rangel, George Rangel and wife, Ashley, daughter Susan Patsy; four grandchildren, Alexandra Boles, Sam & Nolan Patsy, and Raiden Rangel; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden Boles & Charlotte Boles.
