Colonel (USAF Retired) Thomas A. Martin III , MD, aged 75 the beloved husband of Margaret, loving father of Thomas (Janelle), Matthew, and Timothy, the doting PopPop to Madison,Sydney (Matthew) Thomas,Justine (Thomas and Janelle) has passed away.
He drew his last breath on July 11, 2022 at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak in San Antonio, TX. His illness was brief and his death totally unexpected. His kind, calm manner was felt by all he encountered and he was always willing to help those in need. His absence will be a tremendous loss to those who knew and loved him.
Tom was born in Easton, PA on May 28, 1947 to Thomas A. Martin Jr. (a decorated WW II veteran) and Frances A. (Drissell) Martin. He had one younger brother named Michael. His parents and brother preceded him in death.
Tom’s accomplishments were numerous. He received his undergraduate degree from St. Joseph University Philadelphia, PA, medical degree from UTHSC Medical School San Antonio, TX and later did a fellowship at Ohio State University School of Medicine. His career pursuits also reflected variety. In the Air Force he was a T-38 instructor pilot, staff Psychiatrist at Wilford Hall Medical Center, head of Psychiatry at Wright- Patterson AFB, and his last assignment before retiring from the military, head of Psychiatry at Wilford Medical Center. As a civilian he worked in private practice, then the children’s psychiatry hospital connected with the University of TX Medical School and lastly as a civilian M.D. for the U.S. Army.
The pastimes he enjoyed, once he retired in 2015, were many. He was an avid reader and loved to suggest things to read to others. Every day he walked our two dogs and they were well known (in a good way) throughout the neighborhood. He truly enjoyed volunteering at the DeZavala-Shavano Vet clinic, visiting cities and checking the architecture of churches. A favorite was the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. He also loved to photograph flowers.
He was an amazing man who touched and inspired many.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to K9s for Warriors.
