With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thomas Joseph Mulvey, a devoted father, United States Air Force veteran, loving husband, dedicated Capitol Hill officer, talented software developer, and a friend to all. Tom passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by his family.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 27, 1939, to Bridgette and John Mulvey, Tom lived a life of service, innovation, and unwavering kindness. From an early age, he demonstrated a deep commitment to his community and a passion for technology. While serving in the United States Air Force, he met Maria Magdalena Sanchez-Zamora in Madrid, Spain. They married and had three children: Suzanne, Alexandra, and Sean. Maria, of Staunton, Virginia, predeceased him, passing away on December 23, 2019.
Known to his friends as Tom, he proudly served as a member of the United States Capitol Police for 22 years, from the 1960s through the 1980s. He approached his duties with courage, integrity, and a deep respect for the democratic process, protecting and serving the Capitol community. He and Maria worked together on Capitol Hill, serving both administrations with distinction and duty.
Following his distinguished service, Tom embarked on a successful career as a software developer and adjunct professor of technology in Florida. His sharp intellect and problem-solving skills led him to make significant contributions to database development. He was particularly proud of his databases for school management and elderly communities. He continued to share his passion for technology, teaching his grandchildren until his passing at the age of 85, just shy of his 86th birthday.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom will be most remembered for his warm smile, generous spirit, and genuine interest in others. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and his home was always open to friends, family, and even new acquaintances. A true friend, he was always ready with a helping hand, a listening ear, and a kind word. Tom was a generous soul, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Thomas Joseph Mulvey was a devoted husband to Maria Mulvey for 53 years, and a loving father to Suzanne Mulvey-Sadler, Alexandra Mulvey (and her fiancé, Colonel Steve Wood, Ret.), and Sean Mulvey. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support, instilling in his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, integrity, and compassion. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Tinsley Carrington Anastasia Mulvey of Virginia, Sadie Mulvey, and Damon Mulvey of Texas. He also leaves behind his sister, Elizabeth Martin of Nutley, New Jersey, along with her children and grandchildren, as well as numerous relatives in County Clare, Ireland. Brothers George Mulvey and John Mulvey predeceased Tom. Tom will also be remembered by his Capitol Hill Police colleagues, Tampa, St. Petersburg, NY, NJ, TX and FL friends and colleagues, and Ireland friends and family.
Information regarding a local San Antonio memorial and full burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be forthcoming and updated on social media: www.facebook.com/tom.mulvey.144. In lieu of flowers and donations, Tom would want you to be generous to all you meet. His memory will be forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
