LTC (Ret.) Thomas Samuel Scrivener, of San Antonio, Texas died on September 24, 2025. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Scrivener, his sister, Alice Ann Harroun, and his parents, Forrest and Vera Scrivener.
Tom was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma on August 3, 1941. He attended schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma, including Will Rogers High School. In 1963 he graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee with a degree in Spanish education. While in college he met his future wife at the Campus Drug when she accidentally spilled hot coffee on him. With such an auspicious beginning, it was no wonder that the two were married on June 30, 1962. After only one semester studying law at the University of Oklahoma, Tom was drafted into the US Army. He entered the service in December 1966 and was enrolled in Officer Candidate School and the Army Initial Rotary Wing course in 1967.
Tom flew Cobra and Huey helicopters in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division. Among his decorations were the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (3d OLC), Air Medal (39 Awards), Air Medal V Device, Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal (8 campaigns). After Vietnam, Tom made a career in Army Aviation, and he and his family relocated multiple times, including to Camp Zama, Japan and Yongsan, Korea. He retired from the Army in 1990.
After retirement, Tom and Grace first moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia and then to San Antonio, Texas, to be near their grandchildren. Tom adored being “Papa,” and loved his grandchildren immensely. In retirement, Tom took up baking; his breads and desserts were a treat, particularly the chocolate raspberry torte. Tom loved to fish and always told his adult children they “could have bought a bass boat” with whatever fairly large sum of money they spent on themselves. Tom had a quick wit and a terrific sense of humor. Tom also loved trains, ice cream, bourbon, cigars, and dogs. He was preceded in death by dogs Pudding, Bozo, Nancy, Duchess, Montie, and Boscoe and is survived by Nancy II.
Tom is survived by his children, Laurie (Joe Soliz) of Norman, Oklahoma, and Greg (Joy) and grandchildren, Andrew, Meredith, and Ethan of San Antonio; brother-in-law Leon Harroun of Diana, Texas, nephew Thad Harroun of Ontario Canada, and niece Leslie Harroun of Anaheim, California; sister-in-law, Ann Myers of Palm Bay, Florida, and his nieces and nephew, Ginny Sain of St. Cloud, Florida; Holly Flora Meck of New Orleans, Louisiana; Ben Myers of Chandler, Oklahoma; Anna Maria Lane of Palm Bay, Florida; and Wendy Flora of Vienna, Austria
The family will receive friends on October 20, from 11:00-12:00 at Porter Loring Mortuary North, with burial at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. The family would like to thank Gerlie Magee, who helped care for “Sir Tom” the last years of his life, as well as the staff at Brooke Army Medical Center and the caregivers at Vitas Hospice for loving care of Tom during his final days.
