

Mr. Travis P. Hyde, Lt. Col. ( USAF, Ret.) and former Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, HQ Fifth U. S. Army, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Shreveport, LA, June 10, 1931. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Burma Helene Hyde; daughter, Sarina Lawrence of Fort Eustis, VA; son-in-law, Christopher Lawrence, grandchild, Amara Gabryelle Lawrence; and father-in-law, Morrell Bishop Smith, of San Antonio, Texas. Travis graduated from high school in Memphis in 1949 and Colorado State University in 1954, later receiving a Commission as a 2nd Lt. (USAF).
During Travis' USAF Active Duty, he was stationed as an instructor and then planner at bases in California and Texas, and he also served as a navigator in air rescue in Greenland, as a missile crew chief in Okinawa and as a planner with the joint military command in Thailand. Throughout his 29 years of Army Civilian Service and 21 year USAF career, Travis was significantly recognized by many citations and awards to include the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. A visionary in Army Contingency and Mobilization planning and Operations, he led many Army military operations in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during civilian disasters and Army operations during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. His extensive knowledge and experience influenced Department of Defense (DOD) and Army operational planning policies in the Military Support to Civilian Defense/Authorities' missions.
