Trent Ryan Edge, age 19, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2021 in Mathis, Texas. He was born on July 21st, 2001 in Red Bank, New Jersey, to parents Susan and Richard Edge, joining siblings Anna, Jared, & Kristen.
Trent’s life began as the baby boy of a lively household & immediately brought his unique spark. He was the apple of his mother’s eye & if you ask his siblings, they’ll tell you – Trent could do no wrong in the house. His parents describe him as a silly boy who loved making funny faces, playing games, & making his siblings laugh. You’d be hard pressed to find a photo where Trent wasn’t the adorable goofball of the group & to be honest, that never changed.
As Trent grew up, his personality continued to blossom freely. While most kids converge to fit in with the pack, Trent strove to stand out. He actively expressed his uniqueness – whether with his clothes, his music taste, or even his hair. He considered himself a rebel, taking after his older sister Anna. Trent refused to accept being confined by any boundaries & ventured to live life his way.
Trent was an avid gamer. You could often find him playing Nintendo or Xbox, and his brother Jared admits - he was the king of Super Smash Bros. He was passionate about punk & rock music, and enjoyed artists like My Chemical Romance, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, & Linkin Park. His all-time favorite? Elliot Smith. Depending on the day you bumped into him, you might find Trent with a completely new hairstyle. Whether it was long & blonde, short and blue, or completely buzzed off - Trent wore his personality on his sleeve and that was one of his most admirable qualities.
Yet, even with his gentle defiance, his heart was as pure as can be. As his mother’s keeper, he once said “wherever you go, I go”. To his siblings, Trent was a sweet, sensitive brother, with a huge heart. He disliked conflict, and went out of his way to make everyone feel included & heard. His sister Kristen describes him as the most accepting person in the world. You could do or say anything to him, and there would never be an ounce of judgement. Around Trent, you were free to be the truest version of yourself.
These qualities continued to shine throughout his life. They are no better illustrated than through his relationship with his friends who describe him as a beautiful, joyful, one of a kind soul, and a fiercely loyal, accepting, & genuine friend. One who consistently put everyone above himself.
With his friends, Trent was an entertainer, thoughtful and attentive. He was the first to notice if a friend was upset & would immediately work to cheer them up. He would drop everything to be there for them at any time - whether it was a ride, moral support, or even helping with job applications. And just like that baby boy, he was the life of the party & star of the show - sharing his dance moves, making jokes, or singing songs. There is no doubt that Trent was most alive & his fullest self when surrounded by his friends.
On the eve of this young year, Trent met a lover named Helena - a girl who he described as the female version of himself. They immediately bonded & their admiration for each other made them inseparable. His friends say their energy was unmatched & they brought out the best in one another. Through the immense pain our family feels today, we find solace in the thought that our beloved Trent passed in his happiest moments.
Trent leaves behind his mother, Susan Edge; father, Richard J. Edge Jr. and step-mother, Isabel Mijangos Edge; as well as his sister, Anna Edge and Brother-in-Law Tom O’Leary; Brother, Jared Edge; and Sister, Kristen Edge.
Also surviving are his step-siblings, Griffin, Olivia and Gabrielle Korte; best friends and second family, David, Lisvette, Dave, Leslie and Kike Malave; and loving grandparents, Richard and Pauline Edge and Beverly Basham, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Through this tragedy, one thing remains abundantly clear – time with family is the most precious and valuable thing on Earth. We can never take it for granted. As we keep his memory forever embedded in our hearts, we challenge you to honor his character by living an authentic life & striving to bring joy to the lives of others.
Although our pain feels unbearable today, we will slowly prevail from these dark days, stronger and closer – together. Because, in the words of Trent,
“you got rainy days, but you got to look forward to the sun baby”
Trent will be cremated on Tuesday February 9th at 12:30PM CST. We ask that you take a moment of silence at this time to pay respects to our beloved son.
A Celebration of his life was attended by family and friends on Sunday January 31, 2021 at the Lambertmont in San Antonio, Texas. The celebration was live streamed to hundreds of attendees.
THE STORY OF FERDINAND
The Story of Ferdinand is a tale about a peaceful bull who lives with his mother and other young bulls. All the other bulls like to run and buck, but Ferdinand likes to sit under his favorite tree and smell the flowers. When five men come to take the biggest and roughest bull away, Ferdinand stays calm and content. When five men force him into a fighting ring, Ferdinand refuses to fight.
This story resonated with Trent – so much so, that he got this art tattooed on his arm. In a world where people are heavily influenced by outside noise, Trent stood firm in who he was & did what he enjoyed to do. For that, we remember this story as a metaphor of who he was.
