Vincent Troy Gasaway, age 77, passed away peacefully at home in hospice care on Thursday, September 7, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on March 15, 1946 in Maryville, Missouri to Ruth Genevieve Wood and Earl Manford Gasaway who raised their only child to be the kindhearted, hardworking, creative and gentle soul that he was. Vince was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his small, beloved family- wife of 50 years, Linda Gasaway; daughter, Heather Gasaway-Jentz; son in law, Chase Jentz and little dog, Heidi.
Especially in his early years, Vince was characterized as the cool, adventurous rebel with a heart of gold- all about music, motorcycles and muscle cars. He later carried that bold curiousity with him to explore several different career paths. In the 1960’s, he moved to Kansas City and became a certified radiologist, further studied nuclear medicine and then moved to Chanute, Kansas where he met his future wife, Linda, at the Chanute Memorial Hospital that they both worked in. After getting married in Chanute, March 17, 1973, Vince and Linda moved to Norman, Oklahoma where Vince briefly studied pharmacy, but was still unfulfilled within his careers. His path ultimately led him to return to school to pursue his degree in prosthetics at Northwestern University in Chicago where he graduated in 1975.
Vince finally found his calling within prosthetics. A venue where he could apply his creative skills to give renewed life and restored hope to his countless patients who had experienced loss of limb(s) or disability. As a certified prosthetist, he showed unrelenting care, hard work and dedication throughout the 35 + years that he co-owned South Texas Prosthetics in San Antonio, TX until its closure with his retirement in 2012.
Throughout his life, Vince repeatedly displayed what an amazingly skilled craftsman he was through unique outlets such as blacksmithing, leather work and woodworking to create everything from Native American Love Flutes to Japanese Long Bows. He sought adventure through scuba diving. He had a deep-rooted pride in his Scottish heritage, a fascination with Asian/Samurai culture as well as for the core beliefs of Buddhist monks and their practices. Constantly seeking knowledge, he pursued all of these amazing interests and trades for as long as his body was physically capable of doing so.
Vince was a deeply devoted and loving husband, father, defender and friend to all of the wonderful people, extended family and “brothers” that were fortunate enough to have known him and been a part of his life. No one could deny his at-first-glance intimidating stature; A 6’3’ big, tall, bearded biker/santa clause looking dude, but ANYONE who knew him quickly discovered what a giant teddy bear he was. His genuine kindness, the incredible wisdom he shared, his sense of humor along with the laughter and joy he brought to everyone around him, will never be forgotten.
