Bill was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on June 19, 1938, the last son of William D. and Lillie Eady Grayson. He attended Phillips High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Bill married Patricia Click on August 5, 1957 in Biloxi, Mississippi. Shortly afterward, he joined the Air Force, and trained as a Morse code operator and computer operator/programmer. After his Air Force separation and several short-term positions, Bill joined American Security Life Insurance Company as a computer operator, and furthered his programming skills at the same time. He specialized in programming and data processing for the life insurance and annuity industry for the rest of his career. Bill eventually progressed to Senior VP in charge of Computer Operations, and was known nationally in the industry due to his accomplishments.
From an early age, Bill was a talented musician, and music was a very large part of his life. He learned to play clarinet and alto saxophone in school. When he was 14 years old, he began playing with a band in a local nightclub in Birmingham, Alabama, and also learned to play guitar, bass guitar, and a little piano. Bill was unusual in that he didn’t really read music; he played everything completely by ear, and could play back almost anything he heard.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Grayson, his parents, 2 brothers, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Toni Grayson Long (Bill), his son William Grayson (Jackie), 6 grandchildren: Shawna Sprouse (James), Jennifer Benson-Feero (Brian), William C. Grayson (Morgan), Will Long (Emily), Dale Grayson (Allyson), Scott Grayson, and 12 great-grandchildren.
