Yvonne Marie Gonzalez passed peacefully in her sleep on August 22, 2022. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose engaging and creative spirit, wit, intelligence, and sense of humor touched and inspired all who met her. A San Antonio native, Yvonne graduated from Incarnate Word High School in 1955. She attended Incarnate Word College, studied studio art and literature, and graduated in 1959 in English. She pursued her deep interest in drawing and painting and spent several summers studying at the UNAM in Mexico City.
She met and married her former husband, Frank Gonzalez, and moved to Sunnyvale, CA, to start a family. Returning to San Antonio in 1966, she focused on raising her three sons, becoming active in their school life, civic and social causes, and a role in her family's real estate business, in which she eventually became principal. She had a strong sense of social justice and was an ardent supporter of civil rights, voter rights, and equity in education. She was a translator for the campaign to revise the city's charter, was active with the Bexar Appraisal District, and became involved with establishing the Canary Islands Descendants Association.
She was a bright soul, loved the arts and all things creative, traveling and visiting her sons, her very spirited pets, and endless conversations. In recent years, she enjoyed reconnecting with her high school alumnae. Funny, smart, creative and strong, she was universally loved, admired, and enjoyed by so many people. She will be remembered for her kindness to everyone, her steadfastness and support as a friend, for her fierce independence and strength of character, and for always making a unique and lasting impression, even on those she would only know briefly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank R. Gonzales and Marie Luna Gonzales; and brother, Frank Roland Gonzales. Yvonne is survived by her sons, Esteban F. Gonzalez, Carlos E. Gonzalez (Victoria August), Raul E. Gonzalez (Lisa); granddaughter, Eva Gonzalez; brother, Fred Gonzales (Cathy); nieces, Reina and Aliyah Gonzales; and many loving relatives.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
