Shortly after, Al enlisted in the Army as a helicopter mechanic. While serving, Al married his high school sweetheart, Sonya Pimentel. Together, they had three children. Though he loved his time in the Army, Al served his contract and was honorably discharged as a Veteran.
Al spent his life rooted in the community where he was raised. Al went on to work at the family restaurant, Siquio’s, and Hall Cercendo with his parents. He pursued an education that reflected his passion for hands-on craftsmanship and technical excellence. He earned an Associate’s Degree and became licensed in Refrigeration, Heating, and Air Conditioning. In addition to these credentials, he was also a certified welder, a skill that would significantly shape his professional life.
Al found his calling as an instructor at Valley College, where he taught welding courses with dedication and pride. His impact as a teacher extended far beyond the classroom. Under his guidance, many of his students achieved recognition by placing in VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) competitions, an accomplishment that brought him immense pride. Al continued to support the welding community by serving as a judge at VICA competitions even after the end of his teaching tenure. His commitment to mentoring young tradespeople left a lasting legacy on those he taught.
Al later went on to work for many years for the San Bernardino Unified School District. Al worked in Facilities as a maintenance mechanic. Unfortunately, Al retired early due to a work injury.
Al shared a lifelong bond with his high school sweetheart and wife, Sonya Gutierrez, who preceded him in death. Together, they built a loving family that remained central to Al’s life. He is survived by his children, Serena Gutierrez, Alfred Gutierrez, and Alicia Espinoza, as well as her husband, Eddie. His grandchildren, Samuel Aguirre, Emma Gutierrez, Jewlyan, Jayden, Jameson, and Scarlett Espinoza, brought him great joy.
He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren. Whether watching sports with his grandson, Samuel, or sharing playful bets during games, or playing video games, Al found happiness in these simple yet meaningful moments.
