Duane will always be in mine and my husband’s hearts. He and Barbara were always gracious neighbors of my grandma Beverly and I know she is forever grateful to them for their amazing friendship and the support they would show her over the years. Even up until just a year ago, Duane would come visit my grandma to check in on her. His concern and kindness toward her came so naturally to him. That’s just the person he was, always being there when someone needed something.  When I was just a very young child, I knew of he and Barbara as “The Cash’s” and would visit their bird sanctuary often. 

Here is just another of example of Duane’s kindness and generosity: When my husband and I were going to get married and we were looking for a place to have our reception, Duane immediately offered up he and Barbara’s beautiful home! We were amazed by their generosity to offer something that made the start of our lives together so incredible. We had the most beautiful wedding anyone could hope for there at Barb and Duane’s! I remember setting up for the reception and there was Duane, cutting pieces of wood and wedging them under the table legs to keep them from rocking. He had such great attention to detail. 
He and I would talk about teaching of course, us both having a background in special education. He would always ask me how things were going in the classroom and became a great source of understanding and encouragement. 
We will truly miss Duane’s presence in our lives. He will be near and dear to our hearts always. I pray the family finds comfort and peace during this time.

My sincere condolences to the Cash family. I worked with Duane for several years at Bloomington High School, where he was one of the most well-respected and admired staff members. He was a true professional who cared about his students and worked to prepare them for successful futures. He served as a department chair and mentor teacher, working to help new teachers and anyone who needed it. Duane also represented the faculty in the teachers' association and wasn't afraid to speak up, advocate, and fight for the rights of others. For many years he led the BHS accreditation process; he was a true leader and role model who led by example and cared about others.

One incident that made an impression on me took place during the first days of a school year when teachers were getting classrooms ready for the start of a school year and Duane said in a meeting, "If anyone needs to move furniture or things for their classrooms, you're welcome to use my truck. It's parked outside my room and the keys are in it." That said a lot to me about Duane's generosity and respect for his colleagues.

I spoke to many students who revered "Mr. Cash" and who knew him to be someone who cared but also held students accountable and could have "tough love" conversations when they were warranted.

Duane was a pillar of the BHS staff for many years and left his mark on many; his example certainly guided my career as I strove to follow in his footsteps. Though I knew I could never fill his shoes (when I took over his position as Resource Teacher and WASC self-study coordinator), he was always my role model and guide.  He will be missed on this earth, with his quiet humility, his easy smile and laugh - may he rest in peace, and may his family and friends find comfort.
