A celebration of Alex (AJ) Johnson’s life will be held Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Merkley Mitchell Mortuary, 3655 Fifth Avenue, San Diego. AJ passed away suddenly Wednesday morning at Kaiser Hospital where he worked for the past 8 years. A native San Diegan, AJ is mourned by his loving wife, Helene Teibloom Mandell, and his stepchildren, Torrey Freeman and Jon Mandell and their spouses David Freeman and Lynae Mandell. He was cherished as “Grampy” to granddaughters Elodie and Phoebe Freeman, and Emma Mandell. He is also survived by his mother Grace Thurman and many cousins. AJ was adored by all, including brother-in-law Gene Teibloom, sister-in-law Linda Teibloom Rhine and nieces and nephews, Zack and Caitlin Teibloom, Suzy and Sky Ganer, and Amy Rhine, Ian Luepker and Talia Luepker. He leaves behind countless friends who loved him dearly.
AJ was an adventurous soul--professionally raced cars, sand skied, led kayak tours and knew everyone wherever he went. During the last month of his life he was at Desert Trip “Oldchella” as well as Disneyland with his granddaughters and loved every minute of it. And in the words of his beloved Mick Jagger, “It’s only rock and roll but I like it.”
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. https://phassociation.org/Donate
The family will be receiving guests prior to the celebration.
