

Charles Gene Arthur passed November 25 in San Diego, Calif. He was born on September 5, 1948, in Huntington, West Virginia to Charles and Sarah Arthur. The family moved to Phoenix in 1956. In 1966 Chuck graduated from Carl Hayden High School where he was Latin Club President. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 and a Master of Science Degree in 1977 from Arizona State University. While attending the University of Arizona, he contributed to the athletic program by tutoring football players.
During the years at the University of Texas at Austin to earn his PhD he was an editor for the University of Texas Press. He was a member of both Phi Kappa Phi and the National Slavic Honor Society. During this time, he was contacted by HBJ Publishing and hired as an editor based in San Diego. He became vice president in charge of University and Scholarly Publishing.
Chuck voluntarily served with honor in Vietnam as an Army Combat Medic.
In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and time at the property he inherited from his father in Star Valley, Arizona with family friends Tim and Peggy Hasty, their family, and Vicki Sanchez.
He is preceded in death by his brother Clinton and his husband of 48 years Randolph Mariotte. Chuck and Randy were both gifted singers and often were part of the services at Christ Episcopal Church on Coronado Island, CA.
He is survived by cousins Dottie Baur, Surprise, AZ, Shirley Deskins, Flagstaff, AZ. Barbetta Tock, Barboursville WV, as well as nephews and niece Joshua Arthur, Portsmouth, Virginia, Mathew Arthur, St Paul, Minn., Andrew Arthur, Duluth, Minn, Becky Carman, Las Vegas, Nevada and Ross Carman, Tucson, Arizona. Chuck was also adored by many Grand Nieces and Nephews, which he took immense pleasure in spoiling. Ross was Chuck’s caregiver for the last year.
Chuck was fluent in many languages. After his retirement from HBJ he operated the Supertitles from the loft of the San Diego Opera. An extremely complex process, translated text is projected as running commentary above the stage and is timed to exactly coincide with the performers.
Charles Gene Arthur was a patriot and a scholar. He truly was the smartest guy in the room and will be missed by his friends and family.
