Cheryl Lorraine Weatherford was proudly born and raised in Texas. Despite calling California home for almost 30 years, she never lost her Texas twang or her sense of independence. Against all odds, Cheryl was destined for success; popular in all crowds; funny and beautiful; goal oriented/directed; and never afraid of a challenge. Despite her tiny stature, Cheryl blazed her trail in the world. Finding success in many fields of business from flight attendant to fastsigns, builder, real estate developer and small business owner to founder and president of a nonprofit charity, Cheryl demonstrated the highest standard of work ethic and excellence. Cheryl finally "retired" taking great enjoyment in being out in the sunshine with her plants, flowers, and hummingbirds with her dog by her side.
Preceding Cheryl in death was her son, Paxton. Cheryl is survived by loving daughter kelly and son-in-law Mark, and daughter-in-law Ria, all from San Diego. Cheryl is also survived by her only granddaughter, Kendra, and three great-grandchildren. her sister Pat and brother-in-law Rick, and brother David (who shares her birthday thirteen years later) and sister-in-law Jane, all from Texas.
Cheryl's desire to help and compassion for others was expressed in many ways, but especially in A Passion For Paws Rescue, the non-profit organization she founded to honor her son Paxton, who died unexpectedly of a rare cancer at the young age of 32. After Paxton brought Cheryl a white Akita named Zeus, who had survived a fire at a public shelter, she dedicated her time, energy, love and resources to the rescue, rehab and rehome of akitas and other large breed dogs she came to know and love. Through her rescue work, Cheryl gave a voice to the voiceless, brought much needed companionship and unconditional love into the lives of numerous humans, and saved thousands of innocent lives. A Passion For Paws and the "Akita Ranch" have become known all over the world because of its success and Cheryl's passion.
Cheryl always said, "Dogs love you no matter how you look, smell, what your breath smells like, how much money you do or don't have - You're a hero!"
In Lieu of flowers, Cheryl and her family request donations be sent to A Passion For Paws via their website.
