To so many of us, he was best known as Uncle Danny - the kindest soul I have ever known.  I am one of those he touched with his kind heart.   Being new in this country in the early 1980's, he and his wife (Auntie Choleng) helped us as we settled in our new apartment bringing us furniture that they brought all the way from California when they  moved to Virginia.  Uncle Danny even co-signed our 1st car loan.  That was indeed a tremendous help for us then.  I will never forget his generosity and that of Auntie Choleng.  I am so blessed to have been a part of the life of an extraordinary, loving, gentle, and kind person in Uncle Danny.  I will truly miss you uncle but I am happy that you are now home with the Lord with no more physical pains to bear.  God grant you eternal rest Uncle Danny.  You left your family and all of us with great memories that we will forever treasure.

Daniel Cacho Potes was no ordinary man.  He was one of the kindest, most generous man I have ever met.  He always had a smile for anyone who crossed his path.  And those who crossed paths with him will never forget him.  He had a sweet magic about him.  To know Dan was to love him.  My favorite memories are watching him dance with Soledad.  She became a princess with her prince.  And he loved to dance with her.   And, I loved to hear him laugh.  I will always carry him in my heart.  How could I not?  Dear Dan, we will miss you always.  Thanks for being my friend.  ♡

Some of my earliest memories were of Danny and my brother Frank hanging out together on their off duty time from the Navy. He always treated me like an adult; even though I was no where near old enough to deserve that level of respect. He was always kind to my parents and I never saw him refuse to help them out, even if it was just a little thing. So many years later, I took his and Sole's niece to a high school dance in San Diego. He was so generous; he loaned me his car; made sure we went somewhere nice for dinner and I was so scared to "mess up" but I was always appreciative that he trusted a nineteen year old with that level of responsibility. While working in Los Angeles for the FAA, my sister mentioned that Danny also worked for the FAA. I had to search the directory and I found a number and email and I sent the message. Danny responded quickly and confirmed that it was the same person I knew from long ago. My next trip to Washington, we reconnected. I was so surprised that he hadn't changed. He was the same lovable, humorous and generous soul he always was. We connected again when they relocated to Kauai to help with his mom and for awhile I lost track of him when they moved to Florida.  To the Potes Family - I know it was a sudden shock to lose him, but know that he touched so many lives for the better. He was the kind of person everyone should aspire to be - a kind soul, that thought of others before himself - a good father and grandfather - a dedicated civil servant that served our country when it wasn't popular to be in the military and a career that ensured the national airspace system is one of the safest in the world. I owe a debt of gratitude to a man that showed me many things in the short time we spent together - most importantly - how to be a good friend. We'll miss you Danny. 

Sofia, Monica and I love our Uncle Dan .  He was always kind and with a sweetest smile.  He loved My Auntie, his children and Hawaiian music.  Uncle Dan and Auntie Choleng comforted me in my hardest days, I am forever grateful to you.

Sending our love and prayers to the Potes family. We have the fondest memories of Mr. Potes and we are blessed to have become friends through the sale of his home in Virginia. How kind to leave behind beautiful plants inside, paintings, furniture, platters, wine glasses. We adore the cherry trees and other trees and plants he placed years ago. They have grown beautifully. We love you Sherry ❤️
