

Eddie Hariman (Liem Peng Hong) was born in Cirebon, a city in West Java, Indonesia on October 12th, 1924 and died in San Diego, USA on January 16th, 2015 at the age of 90. His father was Liem Tiauw Keng and his mother was Oei Soe Tji. After completing his high school education (Dutch HBS) during World War II; Eddie decided to study Textile Engineering at the Textiel Hoge School in Enschede, Holland. In 1949, whilst at the college, he was involved with the Round Table Conference in Den Haag that agreed to end the conflicts between The Netherland government and the newly created Indonesian Republic. The Indonesian representative was the Vice President Mohammad Hatta. After completing his study, Eddie decided to return to Indonesia to marry Henrica Hariman (The Hien Nio). They were blessed with four children; Jusuf (born 1954, died 2010), Andre (born 1958), Eddie (born 1960) and Yvonne (born 1964). After marriage, Eddie established the I.T.I.C (Indonesian Tobacco Industrial Company) in Malang, Indonesia. He worked as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer until his retirement in 1980. In 1957, Eddie and Dr. Tjia Kian Tie founded one of the biggest company in Indonesia, the Astra International Proprietary Limited. Eddie was very kind and charitable. He was very active and supported many organizations and was charter member and Vice President of the Rotary Club of Malang. He was very knowledgeable and clever; he could speak several languages fluently including Indonesian, Javanese, English, Mandarin, French, German and Dutch. He was the President of the East Java Chamber iof Commerce and the President of the Tobacco Manufacturers of Java. Eddie was often called to give economic advice to President Soekarno, the first President of the Indonesian Republic and also to the Governor of East Java. Eddie had had a truly wonderful life with many hobbies. he loved holidays and has visited nearly 200 different countries and territories. Eddie and Henrica have also been in more than 50 different cruises. Eddie loved fishing and has caught big fish from the seas in Australia to Fiji to Alaska. He also loved hunting trips in Indonesia and Africa. His favorite sport was swimming and his favorite swimming pools were on the hills and mountains surrounding Malang in East Java. However, Eddie's biggest loves were his children, in-laws and grandchildren. His happiest moments were when all of us had a holiday together; like being in a cruise ship. All his four children has had the most wonderful childhood. We had a full size grand piano and we all learned to play it. We all also learned martial arts and had many friends. Eddie and Henrica always supported their children and families in everything they wished to do. At the end of 1973, Jusuf and Andre decided to study in Australia, then later became Australian citizens. In 1980 Eddie and Yvonne decided to study in the USA and became US citizens. Eddie and Henrica followed suit and was naturalized as US citizens as well. Eddie loved politics and in 1992 he was included int he 1992 Presidential Election Registry for outstanding dedication to the Republican Party and to the Republican Presidential Task Force. Two years later he was elected to Life Membership and had the privilege to meet President George Bush Senior. Eddie loved and supported all his four children in their studies and professional careers. All were very successful academically. Jusuf gained M.A. (Univ. Sydney) and PhD (Univ. Pacific); ANdre a B.D.S (Univ. Sydney), Eddie an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (SDSU) and an M.B.A. (SDSU) whilst Yvonne completed a B.S. in Dental Hygiene (USC). Eddie has had a very clever son in-law Dr. Albert Tjan D.D.S. (USC) and clever daughter in-laws Lita Hariman M.A. in Psychology (Univ. Sydney) and Lydia Hariman B.S. in Finance (CSU Long Beach). Most of all, Eddie loved all his grandchildren who also excel academically; Amanda Tjan B.S. in Business (Boston College), Stephen Tjan B.S. in Chemical Engineering (UC Santa Barbara), Dr. William Hariman B.D.S. (Univ. Adelaide); Richard Hariman a Certificate in TTW (Hornsby TAFE), Kimberly Hariman B.A. in Child and Adolescent Development (Point Loma Nazarene University); Michelle Hariman is a junior at PLNU and Joshua Hariman is an outstanding grade 6 student. Unfortunately in early January 2015, he fell suddenly ill and Eddie passed away on Friday, January 16th, 2015. He is survived by two younger sisters Dr. Hetty Tan (wife of Professor Dr. Henry Tan of Cincinnati) and Pretty. He will greatly be missed by all of us. Rest in Peace.
