Born Edith Elizabeth Carne in rural San Diego in 1914; she grew up in Sunnyside turning thousands of chicken eggs every day at Carne’s Hatchery. She graduated with honors from Sweetwater Union High School, class of 1931. Charter member of local hiking club since 1935, through four club name changes, she still organized and led day hikes. She has been on 70 mile weeklong High Sierra treks, and over 250 nights camping out.
She graduated with honors from San Diego State University , and taught fourth grade for 36 years. She was active in American Association of University Women, and has the WHO award. She was awarded Lifetime membership in the PTA.
She married Lee Wyatt in 1947, and raised 2 sons. Her scouting career began when older son Glenn joined Cub Scouts, in 1959. Lee was scoutmaster of troop 894 when he passed on in 1966. Edith dove into running the troop, and pushing her boys and others to make Eagle Scout. Five decades of scouting at all levels up through district office. Silver Fawn. Vigil, Order of the Arrow. Philmont. Woodbadge. Both sons made Eagle, as well as dozens that she coached over that time.
She joined San Diego County Park Society in 1984, to promote camping; son Glenn had been a Ranger, before his passing. She has held every board position.
California Retired Teachers Association honored her for individual contribution in the area of community service.
A lifelong member of the Congregational Church, she moved from the National City to the Chula Vista church in 1960. She has been a well known face in the congregation, serving as librarian most recently. Only Campouts and Hikes could keep her from attending services.
A quiet pioneer for women scouters, a champion of historical societies, a role model of traditional values. Edith did it all. Well.
Edith is survived by her son David, and her granddaughters Nancy, Sara, and Cindy.
