

Tom was born on March 1, 1933, in New York City. At the age of 3, his family moved to Los Angeles. Tom attended Our Lady of Loretto grammar school and graduated from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles in 1951. Following his service in the US Navy in 1953-1954, he attended Los Angeles City College. Tom raised his family in Eagle Rock and Orange and enjoyed refereeing and umpiring youth sports. He worked in the wholesale liquor industry for 35 years in Southern California, retiring in San Diego in 1995. Prior to and following retirement, he enjoyed over 30 years working as a parimutuel clerk at various racetracks in California. He loved traveling the world, sports of all kinds, and spending time with his family.
Tom is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sue; 3 sons, Michael, Patrick (Josephine), and Thomas (Kristy); 2 stepchildren, Sean Brandes (Valerie) and Deirdre Brandes Oei (David); 10 grandchildren, Kristen, Danielle, Kristiana, Ashlea, Thomas and Anna Zois; Kamillah and Khari Brandes, Miles and Liam Oei, and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by granddaughter Sharon Zois.
A celebration of life will be held at El Camino Mortuary, Sorrento Valley, on Saturday, April 17 at 11 a.m. Due to COVID restrictions, seating will be limited. The service will also be streamed live.
