

John F Alves III “Chief” passed away peacefully at home on November 15, 2016, at the age of 70. Born on January 28, 1946, in Tulare CA to John “Elmer” and Alice. John grew up in the Point Loma section of San Diego. He graduated from Point Loma High School Class of 1963 and served his Country in the United States Coast Guard where he received his Marine Engineer License and spent over 40 years as a Chief Engineer in the Tuna Fishing Industry. John retired from fishing in 2008 and spent his days taking care of his properties and being a doting Grandfather. He also enjoyed visiting his fishing buddies and “Taco Tuesday’s” with his Uncle Eddy Mello. Preceded in death by his father, mother, mother in law and son Christopher. Survived by his loving wife of over 50 years Carolyn “Sue”, children John (Monique) and Mishelle (Joe Lott), grandchildren Brooke, JJ and Isabella, sister Julie, father in law Roger. He will be greatly missed by the entire Alves, Mello, Lira, Zimmerman and Leone families. His warm smile, gentle spirit and clever wit will be missed by many. Visitation will be held Monday, November 28th, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., with Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliff Blvd. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, November 29th at 10:00 a.m. Saint Agnes Catholic Church 1140 Evergreen St, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UC San Diego Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Research Center.
