John “Jock” Nichols, Jr., a beloved fourth-generation La Jollan, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on April 1, 2025. Born on December 8, 1935, Jock was a man of deep roots, strong faith, and generous spirit. As a young man, Jock spent his summers on the family ranch in Montana, where he developed a lifelong love of ranching and the great outdoors. He graduated from The Cate School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. It was during their college years at Cornell that Jock met the love of his life, Sandra Foote, beginning a marriage that spanned over 58 wonderful years. Jock built a dynamic career in financial services and was also the proud proprietor of several restaurants. A devoted member of St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, he served faithfully in many roles, including as Treasurer, contributing his time and talents generously to the church community he cherished. Jock was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sandra and their son William. He is lovingly remembered by his children, John Nichols III (Cathleen), Katherine Poindexter (Jonathan), and Margaret Roederer (Lance); nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His legacy of love, integrity, and quiet strength lives on in each of them. Jock’s life was marked by devotion to his family, faith, and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
