Born on June 24, 1944, in the Philippines, Johnny grew up in Tondo, Manila. After losing his father at a young age, he became the man of the house and helped his mother raise his seven younger siblings—a testament to his lifelong dedication to family and responsibility.
In 1966, Johnny proudly joined the United States Navy, where he served with honor for 24 years including during the Vietnam War. His service not only exemplified his courage and commitment to his country but also allowed him to bring his family to the United States in pursuit of a better life. He completed training at the former Naval Training Center in San Diego, purchased a family home in Annapolis, Maryland, traveled the world, and treasured his final duty station in Iwakuni, Japan.
After retiring as a proud veteran in 1990, Johnny and his family settled in San Diego, calling it home for over three decades. He continued his path of public service by working for the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles for 15 years.
A man of faith, Johnny was a devout Catholic and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He attended mass regularly at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Therese of Carmel parishes and supported his daughter and her classmates from St. Michael School in Poway and the Academy of Our Lady of Peace High School. His strong work ethic and commitment to serving God and others left a lasting impact on those around him.
Johnny enjoyed jogging and staying active in his younger years, and in later life found joy in taking long walks with his beloved dogs—Pacman, Lucky, and Scout—around his neighborhood in Rancho Peñasquitos. He was also a sports fan, cheering on his favorite teams, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors, and the San Diego Chargers.
In his final years, Johnny bravely lived with both Alzheimer’s/ dementia and Parkinson’s disease with quiet strength, grace, and resilience. His loved ones take comfort in knowing that he is resting peacefully now. He will be remembered most for his generosity, strength, and unwavering love for his family.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Jose Julian and Victorina Zabat Julian, and his brother Jose Julian Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Nelia; daughter, Katrina; son-in-law, Christopher; grandchildren Grayson, Kingston, Kaison, and Chloe; and his beloved siblings and extended family.
