December 30, 1926 – January 27, 2026
Jose Reyes Ungoco, 99, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on December 30, 1926, to Sebastian and Isabelle Ungoco, in Dinalupihan, Bataan Philippines. Jose was the fifth of eleven children. He was proudly named after the revered Philippine national hero, José Rizal, a name that reflected the strength and character he carried throughout his life.
Jose honorably served in the United States Navy for more than 20 years, achieving the distinguished rank of Petty Officer First Class. By “sheer luck,” and at the Admiral’s request he was stationed in San Diego for most of his naval career—a place that would become his lifelong home. After retiring from the Navy, Jose continued his dedicated service through Civil Service for over 25 years as a Meat Cutter at Naval Commissaries throughout the San Diego area, most notably North Island (Coronado), Imperial Beach, and Miramar.
In 1954, Jose married the love of his life, Lerida. Together they shared 60 beautiful years of marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and adventure. They traveled to six continents, embraced new cultures, and built countless joyful memories with family and friends.
Jose was known for his tireless work ethic, generous heart, and witty humor. He loved friendly competition enjoying golf, pool, cards, mahjong, or basketball with family and friends. A man of many talents, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, ballroom dancing, and cruising the world with Lerida by his side.
He was an active member of his community, contributing faithfully to the Ascension Catholic Church’s Annual Fiesta, where he helped prepare and cook beloved Filipino dishes. He also served as a Board Director for the Bataan Association and was an active member of the National City Filipino organization. His commitment to service extended beyond career—it was a way of life.
Above all, Jose cherished his role as a husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. His family was his greatest pride and joy. Jose is survived by his three beloved children: Arlene Sievert (Bryan), Joyce Glady (Sheldon) and Michael Ungoco (Nancy); and five grandchildren: Ricky Jr. Berry, Camille O’Neill (Chris), Maddox Ungoco, Valentina Ungoco, and Landon Ungoco. He is also survived by his siblings Maximina Macaraeg, Alicia Magday, and Romeo (Myrna) Ongoco.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Sebastian and Isabelle; his loving wife, Lerida; and his siblings Aurora, Francisco, Celso, Edgardo, Diosdado, Floserfida, and Eduardo.
Services for Jose will be held as follows: Visitation/Viewing at El Camino Memorial Park on February 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at Ascension Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m.
Graveside burial to follow at El Camino Memorial Park at 1:30 p.m.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all caregivers, friends and loved ones who offered comfort and support throughout Jose’s final days.
