Judy was born to the late Felix Arciaga and Rafaela Torres, on August 29, 1936 in Tanza, Cavite Philippines. She graduated from Tanza High and received her Bachelors and Masters in Education from Far Eastern University.
She married Ernesto Raymundo Sr. in 1967, and they lived in the Philippines for twenty years before immigrating to United States in 1987. Judy is survived by her four children: Eileen Ray-Hyslop of La Jolla, CA; Ernesto Raymundo Jr., of Dupont, WA; Joselyn Raymundo of Rochester, MN; and Alexander Raymundo of Poway, CA. She is also survived by her six grandchildren; Olivia, Patrick, Jack, Danica, Mila and Ally.
Judy was a passionate educator at heart. Her career started in a remote barrio in the Philippines convincing farmers to allow their children to go to her newly established makeshift classroom. She negotiated with the farmers to allow their children to attend school after working the fields in the morning, so that they could learn how to read and write in the afternoon. Later in her professional career, Judy was involved in implementing the community-based Non-Formal Education Project of the Philippines targeting illiterate adult Filipinos. Her NFE students were provided non-traditional educational experiences designed to increase their skills to lift their standard of living and fight the unrelenting poverty in the area.
Judy immigrated to the United States with her family in her early fifties. To characterise the transition as challenging would be an understatement. She struggled through the loss of professional standing, socioeconomic status and her place in the community she worked tirelessly to uplift. But through her courage and creativity, her bare-knuckled hard work and her unyielding optimism, she established herself as a small business owner providing personalised care to elderly patients with dignity and compassion. Her passion to help people propelled her achievements, and was a value she strove to impress upon her children. That compassion, that love, is her legacy. It will live on in her children.
Memorial will be held at El Camino Cemetery at 5600 Carroll Canyon Road on March 27, 2021. Due to Covid-19, it will be an outdoor celebration at El Camino’s Chapel of the Bells from 12-245pm and interment at 3 pm at the Madonna Lawn
