Justin was born on May 27, 1977 in San Diego, CA to Jack and Anna Bartlett. He went to Rio Seco Elementary, Santana High School, and later received his Bachelor’s in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of California.
To say Justin had a passion for the arts would be an understatement.
Justin is known throughout the heavy-metal music community as “VBERKVLT” for his extremely detailed design work for bands such as Cadaver, Kvelertak, Sunn O))), Trap Them, Dragged Into Sunlight, and the Secret, as well as his highly recognized VHS cover poster for John Carpenter’s: The Thing, and illustrations for Assassin's Creed 3. Justin’s artwork has been featured in numerous gallery shows and books. The list of accomplishments is too long to list! Justin often took time to mentor new artists and commissioned pieces from them to boost their confidence.
Justin’s partner Lauren, and his cat Dio were the loves of his life. He also loved to hike, travel, try interesting food, and learn. Justin frequented museums, galleries, the zoo, and aquariums. He was a music and film nerd, always exploring different genres. He enjoyed passing down his interests to his little sister.
Justin was known for his beautiful smile, sense of humor, quick wit, fierce independence, and wealth of knowledge about health, nutrition, and fitness. He was at peak health and physical shape, which made the cancer diagnosis news in 2021 extremely shocking to Justin, his family, and friends.
Justin Dale Bartlett was preceded in death by his grandparents Leon Pike, Herb and Dolores Paro, Charlotte Davis, and uncle Gary Pike. He is survived by his parents Jack and Anna Bartlett, his uncle and aunt Bill and Mickie Stewart, his sister Ashley Briscoe, his brother-in-law Eldridge Briscoe, his partner Lauren Nackoney, and several other uncles, aunts, cousins, and a nephew.
A public memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at El Cajon Mortuary on 684 South Mollison Ave in El Cajon CA at 11 am.
Plants (Justin loved plants) and donations may be sent to 4369 Pomona Avenue, La Mesa CA 91942, and will also be accepted at the memorial.
