It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lanny Short. He passed away on December 2 at home. He is survived by family and friends whose lives he touched. He was born in Candor, New York on September 25, 1938, to Lawrence Short and Wilma Felter.
On April 24, 1956, only 17 years of age, he left his childhood home with a desire to travel and fulfill his duty as a sailor in the United States Navy. After being accepted into the service he was sent to 9 Weeks of recruit training and then was stationed on the USS Bennington. He served until September 11, 1959. He would often say it was the best decision he ever made.
He never went back to New York to live but settled into a life in San Diego. However, the desire to travel never left him. He loved learning about cultures and histories whether exploring internationally or within the US.
As he got older and life a little crazier, he would often wish he moved to Hawaii. A place that gave him peace.
In the famous words of Lanny, “Pull my finger”
Aloha Dad, Grandpa, friend
