The oldest of 7 siblings, Mariano was born September 3, 1932 in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. He married Milagros, the love of his life, in Manila, where they were blessed with four children, one of whom was taken from this world in infancy.
Mariano joined the Philippine Army in 1953, at the age of 21. In 1965, he was assigned as security escort to then Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. From then on, he served as bodyguard to the Marcos children, providing security as they traveled locally and abroad to pursue their higher education. Mariano retired from service in 1987 and he came to the US to make a home for his wife and children in San Diego, CA.
Even while away from the Philippines, Mariano never forgot his home country. He was always up to date with news and events from there. He also always helped his siblings and relatives. He would literally give them or anyone the shirt on his back. He gave away the nice things and he used old things he bought from thrift shops. Nevertheless, that did not bother him, as long as he knew his relatives/friends were happy with his giveaways.
Mariano was famous for his cooking. He loved to cook “Ilocano” recipes such as dinuguan, pinapaitan, pinakbet, and igado. His cooking will surely be missed.
He loved to crack jokes and do magic tricks. He was a source of endless stories. He just enjoyed entertaining people. He loved talking to strangers and he would approach anyone on the street, to talk to them and ask them how they're doing and where they’re from. As a retiree, one of his favorite haunts were the swap meets. He would always come home with treasures and a big smile on his face. Another pastime of his was going to the casino to play the slot machines.
Mariano is survived by his wife, Milagros; children, Marko, Melvyn, and Manolo; and sisters Amy and Aida.
