

Martha Walker Flippo Hamlet April 18, 1937 - July 22, 2016 Martha was born in Charlottesville, Virginia to parents Nora Agnes Timberlake and Robert Samuel Flippo. Her childhood home was on a farm against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and that is where her character was shaped by community, faith, gentleness and a strong work ethic. She grew up attending Hebron Baptist Church and was a part of the first graduating class from Albemarle County High School in 1954. She met Frederick Pannell Hamlet Jr. while working at Acme in Crozet, Virginia. Their 57 year marriage began June 23, 1956 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, which is located across the street from the University of Virginia. Fred worked at Sperry marine Corporation, Charlottesville, Virginia - a job that eventually took the family to San Diego where they settled. Martha had many professional capacities, including a long career in Human Resources with Blue Cross Blue Shield. Fred and Martha enjoyed a vacation home in Sun City Grand, Arizona, and this is where she found her love of hand quilting. She designed and hand-stitched over 30 treasured quilts. Martha died in her home surrounded by her adoring family. She is survived by: her sister, Jeanne Flippo Bailes who still resides in Charlotttesville, Virginia; her children Jayne Hamlet and Janet Hamlet Francis; son in law Barry Francis; granddaughters Victoria Francis and Lauryn (Francis) Velez: grand son-in law Eddie Velez; and two great grandchildren, Isla Velez and MaKenna Velez. Martha will be interned at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery (Bayside) next to Fred Hamlet, on August 29, 2016. The service will be held at 11:30 am. Donations will be used for the care of the cemetery which includes the Flippo family plot where Martha's father and family members are buried.
