Mary Doris Costa
September 5, 1929 – March 1, 2018
Mary was born in Madeira Islands, Portugal. (A beautiful place she loved to describe as “The Pearl of the Atlantic”). Her parents, Crispin and Narcisa Andrade, immigrated to the United States when Mary was a baby. Her sisters, Clara and Emilia, were born while the family lived on the east coast. The family eventually made their way to California and settled in San Diego. Mary graduated from San Diego High School in 1948, then worked in retail at Sears for a number of years. She married Jose Lima Costa in 1959 at Saint Patrick Church, and they were married for almost 60 years until her husband’s passing in May 2017. Mary was a wonderful mother for her two boys, Joe and John. She was active in Saint Patrick School and Church for many years. For years, she was a caregiver for her parents when they struggled with health issues in the early 1970s. Mary was a steady presence for her family in the aftermath of the 1978 North Park plane crash which struck very close to home. For her entire life, she always cared about family and friends, and was always concerned about the less fortunate in society. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Emilia; and her husband Jose. She is survived by her sister, Clara Andrade and her cousin Madeline Andrade, both of San Diego. She is survived by her sons, Joe Costa of San Diego and John Costa of Phoenix AZ; and her beloved two grandchildren Jason and Angela Costa of Phoenix AZ. Mary was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
