Mel always brought out the best in people. She was a sweet and caring person who would laugh at you if you tripped while walking down the sidewalk, then ask if you were ok.  I'm blessed to have known her and to have shared so many wonderful experiences with her.  I included one of my favorite pictures of her being a goofball during one of our camping trips in Big Sur.  She always knew how to make people smile...

It broke my heart to hear of your passing. I’ll always remember your smile, your corny jokes, and what an inspiration you were to me on and off the court.  The year you coached us was one of the best years of my high school life and I’ll never forget that. From the dancing/cheering  on the court, bonfires, pizza dates, to the serious talks about everything and anything, I know I can speak for all of us when I say that you were one damn amazing person and coach. I met Mel through the Summer Bridge program when she entered UCSD. She went from student, to student worker to friend. We’d talk about life and work and I was often inspired by her. She lived her life in an authentic way and I really admired her for that. My deepest condolences to everyone that loved her and were inspired by her as I was. 

You will be missed immensely, dear friend. We had some amazing adventures and I am honored to have been able to experience them with you. I will miss your quick wit and loko fun times. You were always an inspiration to many. You serve a mean pancit yo! Til we meet again... Rest easy, and be free. Love you always, forever will be missed. 

Such a sad time yet we have wonderful memories of Mel that we will treasure for ever. 
Mel brightened our life every time we saw her, such a full on bubbly person.

I will never forget that camping trip where we hiked into a poison ivy bush and the crazy times we had at the water park acting like we were teenagers again! You were the one I would get excited to see when you’d come down  to visit Johtot and Heidi, because I knew we’d either have deep conversations or just laugh our butts off. I loved that you were always down to rough house with me, feed me carne asada fries when my parents disapproved to eventually them accepting it, sending me books especially my first tagalog book, being there for my parents when I was born so that you and I could have breakfast together in the mornings so they can sleep (newbs),  never changing my diapers because why anyways,  always telling me I'm special, taking the best selfies, and loving me unconditionally with all your heart. Mel you are such a unique soul that will be missed dearly. Every time we hung out with everyone you would always pull me aside and ask me how life was and we’d go into a deep conversations about our futures. I will always treasure those conversations. Mel, thank you for being a kind, gentle, hilarious, compassionate being. When I was having a difficult feeling, you would remind me "whatever arises, love that". My name is Dave Beza. In my spare time, I coach high school girls' volleyball and have been doing that for over 15 years. Mel was the person who introduced me to it. We were at a late night happy hour with mutual friends at TGIFridays across from UCSD. We were sitting across from each other and in talking, she mentioned she was going to coach volleyball at our old high school, Montgomery. I said "Oh that's cool. I wish I could do that" and she immediately replied "Do you want to?" She got me an interview with the head coach, Valerie.  I got the job (my very first coaching job) and it forever altered the course of my life. 

She was the most fun person I could have asked to start coaching with. She was an extreme joy to be around. She was so silly. We spent so much time cackling at each other's jokes in between games or on the sidelines. My favorite story, which I still tell to my players, is that I used to take the job too seriously. Once in a tight match, my frosh team was doing poorly. I took a time out and said something like "What are you doing out there?! Go back out there and either show me you know how to fight or keep doing what you're doing and just die out there on the court." Mel pulled me aside, chuckling and imitating me. "Are you gonna fight?! Or are you gonna die?!... But hey Dave, man, forreal you need to take it easy, hahaha." She was right. I apologized to the team after and we all had a good laugh at my expense. And now I always think of this moment when I feel like I'm taking volleyball too seriously or need to remind my players that we're just playing a game.

This is my favorite memory of Mel. I do have a few more memories of her, but suddenly feeling like I don't have enough. I hope sharing this provides someone some comfort.
