Richard Ulmer Sloan, one week shy of 102, passed away on July 22, 2025. He was a cherished husband, beloved father and loyal brother. He was born on July 29, 1923 in Lincoln Nebraska to Loren and Mabel Sloan.
He was an army veteran who served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a communication specialist for the 8th Army in Seoul, Korea for 23 years. It was during this time that he met his wife Martha and had his son Andrew. He retired to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1983 and began to volunteer. He delivered meals on wheels, visited nursing home residents, and gave his time to serve the First Free Methodist Church. In 2007, he and Martha moved from Fort Collins to San Diego to be near Andrew and his partner, Rick Jauert. Their time was spent enjoying the beauty of Southern California, dog sitting Findlay and Collins, and becoming active members of the First Presbyterian Church.
Richard enjoyed playing softball as a child and golf as an adult. He loved a good buffet and had a sweet tooth.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Russell, Duane, and Robert. He is survived by his wife Martha, son Andrew, and brother Donald.
Richard will be remembered for his calm and thoughtful nature. He was humble and reserved, but when he had something to say, he always led with kindness. In his own words, taken from his autobiography, “I am not a great thinker, although I do meditate on many things, some reasonable and some nonsense. In many ways I am a dreamer… I consider myself a compassionate human being. I cannot see human suffering without wanting to reach out and help in some way. I believe a great majority of people in countries around the world feel the same way. If you smile at them, they will smile back.” Richard, with his heart full of empathy, will be greatly missed.
