The unique, extraordinary Robert “Bob” English was peacefully carried on a wave from this side of Heaven to a bright shore above on Friday, February 28, 2025. Bob was a native San Diegan born 7/11/48, the youngest son of Robert English, Sr., and Marion Lippitt English.
Bob was a caring, devoted husband to his wife, Constance R. English, who together experienced memorable surf and ski adventures with eagerness, and life’s challenges with fortitude, vision, and an abiding sense of humor.
Bob was a faithful and tireless provider to his wife and family. He will watch over from above his step-son, Timothy Johnson, wife Gloria, and his two grand-daughters, Sage and Cheyenne. As well as, brother-in-law Tim Rhea, wife Loretta Barrack Rhea, nieces Laura (Nick) and Kathleen (Dominic), and nephews Matthew and David. A special time for Bob in recent years was seeing the growth of his two great-nephews and great-niece. Bob is also survived by his eldest brother, Rodney Tompkins and wife Louise, along with many English, Robinson and Lippitt cousins, and the extended Herb & Mary Barrack family.
A man who lived simply, Bob’s rhythm in life was the breaking of waves; sometimes gentle, sometimes powerful. His greatest pleasure was a sunny day, warm surf swells, and long board rides dancing on a wave, communing with the ocean. Bob spent a lifetime in the surf of California, Hawaii, Australia, and Baja Sur, Mexico while acquiring a multitude of lifetime friends. His joyful outlook was that life can be a beautiful barrel ride!
Bob always met you with a cheerful smile, was genuinely interested in listening, shared his advice thoughtfully and laughed with gusto. He had many stories to share, usually about surfing, as Bob was passionate about his surfing. Yet he was just as passionate about mentoring the next generation of “groms” which he had the opportunity to do while President of the Sunset Cliffs Surf Association (SCSA). Bob sought to encourage surfer groms to become skilled in the water, respectful of the community, and successful young people in life.
Stories also abounded about his numerous construction jobs during a 40+ year career. Bob began in the ‘70s working for Archie Bowen in La Jolla, then moved on to remodeling and building homes in Ocean Beach, Pt Loma, San Diego, Colorado, and Baja Sur, Mexico. An essence of Bob was being a believer in always having goals that one should endeavor to achieve. He was a creative soul dedicated to both his surfing and construction craft.
Bob possessed a heart full of compassion, giving, true love and forgiveness that was apparent to those who came to know him. Bob’s cherished smile, generous spirit and love of life will be remembered always. Rest in peace our beloved Bob.♡
