Roberta Anne O’Brien, loving wife, mother, and grandmother (Grandma Roe), passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021 in Escondido, CA due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She passed away just 7 months after her husband, Warren V. O’Brien, who died March 8, 2021.
Roberta’s death marks the end of a great generation for the Warren and Roberta O’Brien family. She is survived by her daughters, Tamara Fischer (Peter), Jennifer Zouvas, and Pamela Selna (Tim); her beloved grandchildren, Chelsea (Patrick), Warren, Carissa, Jane, Maxwell, Sophia, and Maria; her siblings, Patricia Wills, Donald Weaver, Cyndee Matlock, and Mark Weaver (Dorie), her brother in-law Cubby O’Brien (Holly), nieces, and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and brother, Larry Weaver.
Roberta was born January 1, 1940 in Wichita, Kansas to Lorence & Margaret Weaver. As a girl, Roberta and her family moved to Granada Hills, California where she graduated from San Fernando High School and served as Honored Queen of her Job’s Daughters Chapter. Roberta married Warren in 1961. They quickly started a family and Roberta graduated from San Fernando Valley State College in Northridge, California in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology soon after their first child was born.
Roberta & Warren raised their three girls in Northridge, California. Roberta stayed at home in the early years and spent countless hours volunteering her time as Girl Scout Troop Leader, Room Mother in her daughters’ class rooms at Topeka Drive Elementary School and Sunday school teacher at church. When the girls got older, Roberta started her successful Real Estate business where she excelled at buying and selling homes for families. Roberta also grew and managed her family’s rental property portfolio which financed her children’s college educations.
Roberta & Warren spent many years teaching their children the love of the outdoors, family and friendships through their many camping trips, water skiing adventures, and snow skiing excursions which always included many friends & extended family. Later in life they passed the joy of fun-filled vacations on to their grandchildren as each one experienced a special trip with Grandma Roe & Grandpa Woe.
Roberta & Warren moved to Escondido in 2003 to be near two of their children and their families who lived in the San Diego area. Grandma Roe played an extraordinary role in the lives of all of her grandchildren. She organized individual visits to her house for each child, family outings to various theater performances, movies, and exciting days of fun at the Zoo & Wild Animal Park. She hosted countless family dinners with Warren & always had a card for every occasion which oftentimes included newspaper clippings about some special current event or article of interest to the recipient. When her grandchildren were in school, Roberta kept busy by volunteering as a reading tutor at a local elementary school.
Warren and Roberta were members of First United Methodist Church in Northridge for many years and belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Escondido most recently. Roberta enjoyed participating in the many church festivities including rummage sales, Christmas Bazaars, and Bethlehem Walks and often volunteered her time. She also cherished her time as a member of a Church Women’s Circle group.
