PART II: Eulogy

From 1996 onwards, Roddy and I would communicate on-and-off. He’d call to check-in from time to time or invite me and the family over to celebrate the holidays together. Whenever he checked-in, it was usually when he had something to give away that he didn’t have the heart to throw out. I accepted them, of course, but I didn’t necessarily keep them for myself either. I became a redistributor who passed the items along to others who did need them. 

Cousin Roddy was the serious type but he was gentle soul on the inside. A devoted father and husband who ensured his family had a good life. As the 2nd eldest amongst five brothers, he always put family first above all else. He was man of great faith who’s charity and compassion knew no limits. If there was one thing I wished we could’ve done better, it would be keeping in better touch over the years, but when your families are as big as ours between siblings and the armies of cousins scattered around the world, it’s perfectly understandable. For what it’s worth, I am so grateful that our paths eventually crossed when we did. The memories I have of him when I was young are just as precious as the memories I hold of him now. I’l always remember Rodrigo as the Protector. Whether I’d be 6- or 64-years-old, he’ll always be my Protector. 

I love you and I’ll miss you terribly.

PART I: EULOGY 

When I was about 6 or 7 years old, my Auntie Rosario, Roddy’s mother, would “borrow” me for the weekend or an entire week when school was over to spend time with her family. While I was there, they treated me like one of their own; pampering me like the sister they never had.

The fondest memory I have about those days was Cousin Roddy and Rubeng playing the band together with my two elder brothers, Kuya Mike and Kuya Dan. Thanks to them, my mom’s house was always filled with music. It was their personal rehearsal studio and nobody minded. My brothers were on guitars and vocals. Rubeng on drums, and Roddy on bass and sang vocals too. They sang just about anything and everything that was popular in the 50s and 60s. If you were to ask me which songs were my favorites, I couldn’t give a proper answer because I loved them all. Roddy would strum on a single string as he sang along with Kuya Mike and the others. They were often invited to play at fiestas and events in our small town of Dinalupihan; at one point, they even went on tour for a while. But whenever they came home to rehearse, they always found time to play just for us. 

When Roddy decided to join the Navy, I was around 9 years old. He was the first Carreon to set sail and officially leave home. Naturally, this was a huge occasion for us and so the whole family packed into a bus and drove all the way to Cavite City to see him off. I remember feeling so devastated that I cried the entire time we were there. This memory is especially sad because that was the last time I ever saw him personally.



My dearest Uncle, we may not be able to see you physically anymore, but you will forever remain in our hearts, we will miss you everyday, thanks for the memories, i love you ❤️
