Romulo Areno Diaz

Romulo Areno Diaz was the loving husband to his wife of 61 years, Wanda Thomas Diaz. Romulo, 87, of San Diego, California, passed peacefully from this life while comforted by his children on August 4, 2023.

Romulo was born in the Municipality of Victoria of Tarlac, Philippines, September 5, 1935, to Epifanio and Dolores Diaz. He enlisted in the US Navy at the young age of 18 and experienced a long and adventurous career protecting the world at sea for over two decades. After his retirement from Military life, he continued his education at Miramar College to receive his second associate degree while continuing to serve in government affairs at the US Postal Services. He enjoyed another successful career at his second and final retirement from the work force.

Romulo spent his entire adult life as the sole provider for his wife and seven children. He loved camping with family and took them on many road trips. However, he absolutely refused to vacation on cruise ships, despite multiple invites from his children. The answer was always the same; “Hah, I’ve been on ships enough”. He was disciplined yet kind enough to “adopt” just about anyone who needed his provision.

Romulo will join his late daughter Mary among the heavenly hosts and is survived by his wife Wanda, two daughters Maria and Susan, four sons Romy Jr, George, Joseph, and John, seven brothers Manuel, Rod, George, Joe, Freddie, Ben, Epifanio Jr, two sisters Edith and Nora, twenty-four grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 31, at El Cajon Mortuary, 684 S Mollison Ave, El Cajon, CA 92020, private family time at 2:00PM, Catholic procession at 2:30PM, Memorial Celebration of Life service at 3:30PM, followed by dinner reception at 5:00PM for all service attendees. Committal/Interment Full Military Honor Service will be held Friday, September 1, at Miramar National Cemetery at 11:15AM, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122. A lunch fellowship for extended family will be held at 7040 Miramar Rd, San Diego, CA 92121.
