STEELE NICOLSON GILLASPEY (Nick)
7/26/1957 - 5/28/2025
Born at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Lieutenant Colonel and Ann Gillaspsey, Nick accompanied his parents to Heidelberg, Germany at six weeks old, becoming the youngest passenger on the USS United States.
At the age of 4, they returned to the United States, living in Seattle, Monmouth, New Jersey, and finally Bangor, Maine, where he was introduced to his mother's large Greek family, meeting numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Following his father's death, Ann relocated with Nick to San Diego.
In 1976, Nick joined Ronald Reagan's first presidential campaign, where he met Kathie, the love of his life, whom he married in 1981. The priest titled his homily "One for the Gipper." They were together until three weeks before their 44th anniversary.
Nick’s love for life and his jovial, booming laugh endeared him to everyone he met, making instant friends. He is survived by Kathie, his half-sister Stephanie (Rob), nieces Pam and Melinda, and great-nephews Aaron, Jake, and Noah. Before being united with his half-sister, he became an integral part of Kathie’s family long before their wedding. He often recounted the story of helping all his brothers-in-law dress for their proms. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Nick” to Kathie’s siblings Mike, Dan, Ellen, and Lori, and their children, Steve, Ben, Jackie, Ellie, Tony, Kevin, Jessica (his God-daughter), Ryan, and Justin. Additionally, he had bonus nieces and nephew Anahata, Eli, and Mary Elaine, who all lived with them at various times.
Nick’s love for life and his infectious laugh left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He was truly a force of nature and will be deeply missed by all.
Everyone who knew Nick has their own special "Uncle Nick" story. We invite you to share your favorite Nick story in the guest book below.
