Pearl and I met Edan many years ago when he was selling a few paintings in order to raise enough money to publish his comprehensive book.
He was a true gentleman!

Edan, if their is life after death, I'll  forever be thankful for your introduction to California art.  I enjoyed our lunches together and going to Butterfield's with you and bidding for you sometimes.  Hope all is  well in Kentucky bluegrass country, I'm sure your pa enjoyed the victorian clocks you asked me to look for.  Bye Edan. Dave Lopez of San Franciksco

I first met Edan when I went to interivew him for a newspaper article and when I entered his apartment my heart started pounding. I absolutely treasure the paintings I purchased from him--some from well known artists some from names few people know now but who still produced lovely work. Edan had a marvelously sly sense of humor  and was always ready to give me a great quote for an article or advise me on an art purchase. RIP

I considered Eden Hughes a friend of mine. We did not see each other very often but established an excellent contact. We enjoyed a few lunches together where we discussed my great uncle Julian Rix a prominent painter and longtime San Franciscan. He was a gentle man and it tour de force when I came to our history. I will very much miss not seeing him and enjoying his gentle power and knowledge.

Eden was a force of nature.  He was so passionate about California art history - what an encyclopedic knowledge.  Wonderful raconteur and scholar.  He loved spinning the web and socializing too.  We will miss him, but his legacy of writings and scholarship will live on and inspire many others who follow.

I will never forget seeing his Rare Collection of Ca. Art in his home. While I was there he was babysitting some white furry kittens and one jumped on a small painting he had laying flat on the floor it didn't faze him at all. So sorry to hear of Edan's passing. I had the opportunity to have a few conversations with him and felt his passion about California Art, and shared the books with many friends. In the early days before the internet his books were an extremely invaluable tool to all of us, and still are. May he rest in peace.

I just today learned of Edan's passing, and am so very sad.  Edan had in his vast collection a painting done by my grandfather, Alfred Ray Burrell, and I bought it from Mr. Hughes a few months ago.  Edan was so nice to allow for a lay away plan, and was always so very kind and patient.  I wanted to meet him, but it never happened, which I really regret.
Edan did so much for the art world, in amassing his book, and his collection.  He was a very special and dear man, and I miss him even though we did not meet.  I knew he was sick, and his last email to me he said "never forget me."  I will never forget him, and every time I look at my grandfather's painting, I think of Edan, and having bought it from him makes the painting even more special, as it passed through Edan's hands.  May he rest in a place full of beauty!

I got to know Edan by helping research the south bay artists of California for his last work. He always wanted to make sure any data was factual with some type of back-up before he would include it in his book.
The are world has lost a very important walking encyclopedia of art.

I am deeply saddened by Edan's passing. He has made incomparable contributions to the legacies of early California artists. I first met Edan in 1999 when I inquired about my grandfather, artist Tilden Daken. Not only did his collection include 8 Daken paintings, he was overjoyed that an ancestor had surfaced to help him unravel "some of the most intriguing mysteries" of all the artists he had researched. Since our first meeting, and a sharing of information,a friendship formed. We saw one another often over the years. Each time I visited his home, I marveled at his vast collection of art. His contribution to the art world, his "Artists in California" publication, and his collection of art must be preserved for generations to come. He led a facsinating life and had a charming sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

Eden welcomed me into his home many years ago---to listen over tea to his grand adventure and passion for California art. He was focused in his artistic tastes, determined in his goal to educate his readers and most importantly gracious in his interactions with both important and novice collectors. Thank you Edan! I was saddened to hear of Mr. Hughes passing, but I am glad my family and I had the opportunity to meet Edan on a few occasions.
He imparted so much knowledge and will always be remembered as a kind person willing to share stories and knowledge related to his passion. 
Like so many others, I learned so much from him over the years!

We purchased several paintings from Edan over the years, and always enjoyed visiting his home on Dolores Street and admiring his collection of Early California artists.  Edan was a great conversationist and we shared many stories over the years.  He will be missed by many.
