San Mateo, California, on the evening of Sunday, January 4.
Born in Denver, Colorado, the year after Charles Lindbergh made his famous solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, Herb developed an interest in aviation at a young age. After graduating from the University of Denver, he served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge in 1952.
Herb then embarked on a long career with United Airlines, serving the company in Denver, Seattle, at World Headquarters in Chicago, and finally in San Francisco. He retired in 1988 as Director of Planning for the Western Division of the company.
Not content to relax during his golden years, Herb held part-time jobs at Doidge's Restaurant on Union Street in San Francisco, followed by several years at the Union Street Bed and Breakfast Inn. Both of these establishments valued Herb's professionalism so much that they worked around his travel schedule, which consisted of three extended trips to the Philippines each year.
Herb was also a dependable volunteer at SFO Museum, located at San Francisco International Airport. He could be found there most Sundays welcoming visitors and engaging them in conversation.
Herb is survived by a cadre of friends including Jan and Gary Delago, Joe Wilson, David H. Stringer and Dennis M.
Raybuck, Neil Hart and David Wasserman. In accordance with his wishes, Herb's ashes will be scattered at sea by the Neptune Society.
He will be missed.
