Lucille Marie Dedier Meyer (Lu) was born in San Francisco on May 11, 1924, the youngest of the six children of George and Sadie Stanton Dedier (Dedijer). She graduated from Lowell High and Cal and majored in Hispanic Studies and romance languages. She worked briefly for PG&E but an entrepreneur at heart, she founded House of Homes Real Estate Co. while still in her twenties. Lu met her husband Herbert Meyer, when she called Meyer Brothers Termite Control to inspect one of her listings. They married in 1955. Together they raised four children and worked together in real estate.
Lu’s success in real estate sales was due to her efforts to help her clients purchase their first homes, then later she showed them how to refinance and grow their estates. She encouraged people to live their dreams and felt that nothing was beyond their reach. She inspired many to achieve.
In the late 60’s she and Herb diversified to selling vineyard land in Sonoma and Napa. They acquired RustRidge Ranch in Napa Valley in 1972 and planted grapes. The family eventually turned the property into a winery and a B&B.
Lu’s appreciation for wine and came from her father, an immigrant from Yugoslavia, who came for the Gold Rush and opened The Silver Moon restaurant in SF. Lu’s appreciation for culture came from her mother a buyer for The City of Paris.
Lu enjoyed the opera and had season tickets for years. She seized the opportunity to be an extra in the production of La Boheme at the SF Opera House, an experience she cherished. She appreciated antiques and frequented La Salle Gallery. She liked modern art and travelled on cultural exchanges with MOMA and visited Cuba and Turkey to learn about their art.
Lu enjoyed betting at the racetrack with her brothers Stan and Tony Dedier. After she acquired RustRidge Ranch, she bought a thoroughbred stallion named Napa Valley then purchased mares to breed to him. Her most successful racehorse was named RustRidge Zin.
She raised her grandson Curtis and sent him to FAIS in SF. She championed bilingual education and was a great supporter of the school.
Lu passed away peacefully in her home on November 20, 2016, with her family by her side. Lu leaves behind sons Stan (Diane) and Grant (Marilynn), daughters Susan (Jim) and Angele (William), and grandchildren Curtis, Lindsay and Garrett (Meredith) and great grandson, Nolan.
