Our beloved mother, Ethel Henderson, was born on August 31, 1918, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Reverend Harrison and Lula Davis. She was the oldest of five siblings that all preceded her in death. She graduated from Central Colored High School in Shreveport. She later obtained her license in cosmetology. In 1938 Ethel married the love of her life, Willie Henderson. Five years later they moved from Shreveport to Los Angeles Ca. The family then moved to San Francisco, where Willie and his brother, Eddie, established Henderson's Garage across from Golden Gate Park. During this period, three children were born to their union; LaVonne, Audrey, and Daryle.
Ethel's greatest joy was creating a loving and nurturing home for her family. She also enjoyed shopping in all the best stores, international travel, games of chance and spending time with her friends. For many years she was also the president of "La Madames" social club in Los Angeles. She was also an avid member and supporter of the PFLAG organization. Until her health declined, she was an active member of various committees at All Saints Episcopal Church in San Francisco.
Ethel passed away peacefully on April 13, 2013 in Antioch California, with her loving family at her side. She was preceded in death by Willie, and is survived by her daughters LaVonne and Audrey, son Daryle, Son-in-love - Ronald Nelson, grandchildren: Kevin, Jeanine, Brandy, Corey and Lance, great-grandchildren: Joshua, Trent, and Layla, and a number of other relatives and close friends.
Throughout her life Ethel was outspoken, and her spirit and compassion never wavered. Her smile was forever present, and her grace always at hand- - a lady, a wonderful mother, a fashion doyenne, a confidant, and a true friend. She was a fiercely independent woman who never hesitated to express her conviction for what she believed in. Ethel often said that she was truly grateful that God allowed her to live such a blessed life. Her presence will be greatly missed.
