Rene was someone who always had a smile on his face. I would see him all the time at 24 hour fitness Portero where we would talk about running and all the races he and his wife loved to participate in. His awesome upbeat spirit will be so missed.

This is shocking news! He was the healthiest guy I knew...My deepest sympathy and thoughts go out to his wife, Kumiko and his family. I knew them from attending Grace's step classes at 24 Hour Fitness...He was always a friendly, sweet guy with a great sense of humor...always teasing me about using "my advanced age" as an excuse to not join him in his ultramarathons or his quest to do 6 back-to-back classes at 24HF! He was a great inspiration to us old guys! Please extend my condolences and support to his family...

I knew Rene as a friend from Regent Thai Restaurant. He kindly and a nice person. Me and staff from Regent Thai will miss you. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Rene, you will surely be missed at the gym. Who will I toss the water bottles across the gym to now? You are a great inspiration for me. I don't know anyone who can run ultra-marathons during the weekend and then attend multiple gym classes the following week, then repeat again the next week. When I said bye to you last Thursday, I didn't think it would be the last time. I admire that you went out doing something you loved, and I hope I will also.

Rene was a real inspiration to many (including myself), fearless and a real "get up and go" kinda guy. He would shake off blisters, cuts and bruises and thrived. Rene was also one of the nicest fellas in the gym - often giving up a much coveted bike in spinning class to others - on many occasions. Never a dull conversation with Rene - as the world was his oyster. Safe travels my friend. Until we meet again.

It is way too soon for you to leave this world. You were always so warm, friendly and up beat.I remember when your passion was riding motorcycles. Too many fast trips down Hiway 1 and it was time to find a new passion. You switched to a bicycle, but Komiko didn't really take to pedaling. Lucky for you, your wife was happy with joining you at the gym. I was so amazed when you took up running races. Not those mini 20k races either. GOING for the big races, 100+ miles really got you blood going! I remember your excitement when you came in 2nd place in your age group for one of your races. You proudly showed off your little trophy. 

I thank you for taking care of my kitty Mischief when i traveled. Mischief loved it when you would talk to her at my window. Though you could really hear her she was making purring sounds back to you as you talked to her. When she would hear you outside, she run to her window perch. She will miss you too.

I knew Rene as a friend & landlord for 15 years. His singular wit and great spirit were always a welcome presence. He was a truly a renaissance man. I will miss him.

My heart is filled with great sadness. Rene and I met 40 years ago in SF at Glide Memorial Church hanging out listening to music with many other 60s generation youth. I have many wonderful memories of us hanging out at North Beach, Noe Valley, the Cliff House and numerous cafes talking for hours or dancing at a club. Rene also got me a job driving a cab when I needed money. Even though I moved to LA iin the mid 80s we remained friends, shared emails, travel stories, and many aspects of our changing lives. Last time we met in SF we went to the Cliff House and talked about the latest happenings in our lives. He was sharing all about his marathons, hours at the gym and how happy he was doing what he loved. He was thrilled that Kumiko was also involved. I feel truly blessed that he was a part of my life and will miss him. My thoughts are with Kumiko and his family.

There will always be a presence hovering over my exercise endeavors urging me to do my best-the spirit of Rene!

Rene was not only an inspiring and powerful athlete, but also a great friend. I LOVED seeing Rene working hard in morning classes and talking with him after class. He was so intelligent and interesting. We picked up running around the same time and talked about racing; he often shared articles with me and ALWAYS motivated and inspired me. When I first started teaching, he helped me perfect my bicep curl. Walking into the gym was not the same this morning and I deeply saddened. His kind spirit and inspiring ways will always be with me. My thoughts are with Kumiko and his family.

Rene was a wonderful athlete who was inspirational to his clubmates from the fastest to the newest runners. I enjoyed joking with him before our runs and will miss him. My thoughts and prayers with Rene's family in this sorrowful time.

Rene was the most enthusiastic and purposeful athlete I've met in years. Always had a new adventure, something new to strive for - great guy. We just fist-bumped at the gym last week in cycle/boot camp about his upcoming race. His last race. Dammit. :-(

RenÃƒÂ© was a great friend. He had the biggest heart and would help everyone, even strangers, at the gym. He was so inspiring to newcomers and kind to existing friends. He will always be missed and we will keep going to the gym, though things will not be the same without him there. He would have loved for all of us to continue to live a healthy lifestyle, the way he has led us always.

I am so saddened to hear this. Rene was a fabulous athlete, and such an upbeat spirit. He will be missed by all those who looked up to him as an inspirational role model.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rene's family at this time. I enjoyed running with him. He was a strong runner with such a tremendous spirit. We will really miss him.
