Robert George Manette was born in 1930 to an Italian mother, Grace Manette, and spent much of his childhood in Philadelphia, initially with his mother, and later with his aunt’s family. After high school he joined the navy, serving for 4 years, after which he moved to Washington D.C. Robert moved to San Francisco in the early 60s, where he met his partner, Richard. Robert had a lifelong love of travel, especially on ships and trains. In the earlier part of his career he worked for a shipping company, but later, through founding a business to provide answering services for professionals, the freedom of his occupation enabled him to indulge his passion for travel directly. After selling the business and losing Richard prematurely, Robert spent many years filled with regular cruises, train trips, and visits to friends in the US west coast, the UK and Europe. He developed a love of dogs, and his companions for many years were the much loved (and often spoiled!) Welsh Terriers Gwendolyn, Chance, Natasha and Lady Diamond. Robert joined St. Mary’s about 20 years ago, where he made many friends. He worked in the Food Delivery program, was on the pastoral care committee and served as an usher on many Sundays.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Robert will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, 2325 Union Street, (at Steiner), San Francisco, CA 94123.
