

Age 92 passed away March 27th, 2013 in her home in San Francisco. Ruth was born in 1920 to Bessie Lee and Lowry W. Lewis. Ruth grew up in Crestwood Kentucky where she was very active in 4H she was also the 1932 county spelling bee champion. Ruth earned a BA from Transylvania University and a Masters in Psychology from Syracuse. After graduating from Syracuse she joined the American Red Cross where she was stationed in India for the remainder of WWII. While in India, Ruth made many lifelong friends, and her future husband, John Murray. They wed in 1946. In 1950 Ruth started her 40 year career at San Francisco State University.
Ruth loved traveling, the theatre, and spending time with family and friends. She was very active in many organizations including, Stepping Stone, Friends of the SF State Library, SF State Retirement Association, and the China Burma India Veteran's Association. Ruth loved dancing and singing – especially to the popular tunes from the 1940's. Ruth gave her time selflessly to her organizations and her family. Her grandchildren will miss her lullabies. We will all miss her beautiful smile and big heart. We were blessed to have her for 92 years.
Ruth leaves behind Son Patrick, Daughter-in-Law Theresa, Grandchildren Monica, John, Angela and Nicole, Nieces Karen (Murray) Morvant , Kathy (Murray) McAndrew, and cousin Pat Young and many friends. A Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 6th, from 1:30pm with a Funeral Service at 3pm at Halsted N. Gray - Carew & English. Private interment will be held in Crestwood, Kentucky.
