Born in Newton, Iowa on August 14, 1935, Gary’s journey eventually took him west to Canoga Park, California, where he grew up. He attended UCLA, a university that would remain close to his heart for the rest of his life. After graduation, Gary answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. His distinguished military career included service in Vietnam and numerous other posts around the world, eventually retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Always seeking to grow, Gary returned to the classroom following his military service, earning a degree in computer science. He settled in Pasadena, California, and began a second successful career as a computer programmer for Parsons Engineering. He remained with the firm until his retirement in 1985.
Gary was a man of diverse interests and boundless energy. An avid athlete, he found joy on the baseball diamond, the volleyball court, and the golf course. His loyalty as a sports fan was unwavering; he could often be found cheering on his UCLA Bruins at football games, the Dodgers at the stadium, or the Kings on the ice.
Beyond the arena, Gary was a dedicated patron of the arts. He was a staunch supporter of the Pasadena and Los Angeles Symphonies, the opera, and various local acting troupes, finding great beauty in the cultural fabric of his community.
Family was the cornerstone of Gary's life. He was preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Linda, Londa, and Sandra. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and integrity, survived by his many nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and spirit.
