Sonia was born as the only child of Octavio Antuña Burgos and Estela Antuña (Delgado) on March 23, 1936 in La Habana, Cuba. She attended Instituto Baldor, as well as Universidad de La Habana, where she earned a degree in Public Accounting.
Shortly thereafter, she went to work at a CPA firm where she soon met the office manager's son: her future husband and best friend through over 50 years of marriage, Prospero Diaz.
She was working on a second degree in International Relations when the political situation caused her and Prospero to flee their beloved island of Cuba in 1963. Living for a brief period in Mexico City and then in Miami, Sonia and Prospero finally settled in Southern California where they would live for over 45 years. They had one son, Anthony, who presently lives with his wife Cristina in Orange, California.
Sonia worked her entire career in the Audit department of United California Bank, which subsequently became First Interstate Bank. She retired in 1994 and began enjoying the fruits of her many years of labor, regularly partaking in her favorite activities: weekly trips to the local casinos to play the slots and her regular bargain hunting trips to her favorite store, Walmart. She always had amazing stories to tell about all the money that she had saved at Walmart and how much more she could now play at the casinos!
Always liking to "keep busy," she later took on a part time job as an administrative assistant at Howard's TV and Appliances, where she worked for several years.
Sonia is survived by her husband, Prospero, her son Anthony, and her daughter-in-law, Cristina. A viewing will take place on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Turner Stevens Mortuary in San Gabriel. A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m.
