January 4, 1935 – April 25, 2025
Dr. Chiu J. Yuan, M.D., Ph.D., passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born on January 4, 1935, in Yunlin County, Taiwan, Dr. Yuan’s life was defined by an unyielding dedication to the practice of medicine, a profound sense of duty to family and community, and a lifelong commitment to personal excellence.
Dr. Yuan began his higher education at the College of Science, Tunghai University continuing on to the School of Medicine at Hirosaki University in Japan. After completing an internship at Tokyo University Hospital, he earned his Japanese Physician’s License in 1966 and pursued postgraduate studies at Tokyo University, receiving his Doctor of Medical Science degree in 1972.
In 1965, Dr. Yuan married Feng-yin Li in Yokohama, Japan. Feng-yin was also an alumna from the 1960 graduating class at Tunghai University and pursuing her graduate studies in Tokyo. Their marriage laid the foundation for a strong, loving and supportive partnership that lasted throughout their lives. After immigrating to the United States, Dr. Yuan completed his surgical residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He practiced as general surgeon at Napa State Hospital and held medical licenses in California, Illinois, and Michigan.
Dr. Yuan maintained a private practice on North First Street in downtown San Jose for over 40 years, serving many in the Japanese and Taiwanese American communities with dedication and compassion. With his office near Japantown, he was a familiar and trusted presence in the area—both as a physician and a member of the community—regularly enjoying his favorite Japanese meals at local restaurants. He formed lasting connections with many of the families he cared for and was highly regarded for his thorough approach to patient care, calm demeanor, and active role in professional medical associations. Dr. Yuan was also known for his warm sense of humor, often prescribing laughter alongside his medical advice. Helping others through medicine was his true passion and lifelong commitment.
Outside of his medical career, Dr. Yuan was an avid golfer, passionate skier, enthusiastic karaoke singer, and graceful ballroom dancer. He was a proud member of Almaden Country Club, where he cherished time on the golf course and the friendships he formed there. A devoted sports fan, he delighted in cheering for the San Francisco 49ers and the San Jose Sharks, sharing countless memorable moments with family and friends.
Dr. Yuan is survived by his beloved wife, Feng-yin; his son, Dean; his daughter, Vera; his son-in-law, Hjalti; and cherished grandson, Dagur—all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His legacy endures in the many lives he touched, the family he nurtured, and all those who were healed by his hands and heart.
